When a decision is made to close school districtwide and cancel a scheduled day of student attendance prior to the students coming to school (i.e., severe storms, epidemics, health conditions, etc.), the director of operations will activate the LEIN system and the superintendent will activate the District Administrative Communication Network. Public announcement of such nonscheduled closing days shall be made the morning of the day of closing, except in extreme emergency where there is no doubt about the inability to hold school. Parents and staff shall be informed of the radio and TV stations over which the announcements will be made prior to the start of each school year and periodically throughout the school year.
Once public announcement has been made to close school districtwide, no athletic practice sessions will be held. All home athletic contests will be postponed and the decision to reschedule lies with the athletic director. If cancellation of school is due to inclement weather, all away athletic contests will be postponed and the decision to reschedule lies with the athletic director. EXCEPTION: If out-of-district schools hosting MHSAA district, regional or state tournaments are proceeding with contests, administration will make every attempt to allow Walled Lake teams the opportunity to compete.
With the exception of the administrators and employees in the Maintenance and Mechanics Departments, and certain custodial and secretarial employees, when school is closed districtwide prior to students coming to school and official public notice is announced, employees will not be required to report for duty. At the start of each school year, administration will determine those employees who will report for duty on nonscheduled closing days. Pay for nonscheduled closing days shall be according to collective bargaining agreements.
In the event of adverse conditions (i.e., severe weather, etc.) on days when students are not scheduled to report, but teachers and/or support staff are, those employees scheduled to report shall do so unless official public notice indicates otherwise.
Individual Building Closings
When an individual school building is closed prior to the start of the school day (i.e., water, heating, electrical problems, etc.), the building staff may be required to use this day for previously-approved activities related to the job or for enhancement of professional skills, copies of which shall be on file in the school office and the office of the superintendent. Administration will assume the responsibility of notifying the affected building staff as to whether they are to report or not.
If a secondary school building is closed because of a problem in a particular area and locker rooms and athletic facilities are not affected, administration may allow athletic contests and practices to be held.
It is recognized that once school is in session, the preference will be not to close school. When a decision is made to dismiss one or more schools early, the following guidelines will be followed:
1. The superintendent will notify all cabinet members.
2. The deputy superintendent of schools will notify the principals of all affected schools. (For example, if one high school is dismissed early, shuttle students from the other high schools are affected.)
3. Principals will provide appropriate instructions to staff. (See Elementary and Secondary Schools Instructions sections below.) Principals will post a sign(s) in
the main entry(s) stating the building is closed, the reason, and that all afternoon and evening activities scheduled in that building are canceled or postponed.
4. The deputy superintendent of schools, will notify the Head Start/preschool coordinator of any needed information.
5. The executive director of instruction, technology, and assessment, will notify the directors of community education and athletics. Every attempt will be made to provide such notification prior to 2:00 p.m.
6. The director of community education, professional development, and grants, will notify all affected instructors.
7. The director of athletics will notify all affected coaches. (See Athletics section below.)
8. The director of operations will notify the supervisors of transportation and food service.
9. The director of community relations will contact the media.
Elementary Schools (Revised 6/17/04)
If a decision is made to dismiss an elementary school(s) early, the building fan-out system will be implemented. In the event early dismissal occurs prior to the completion of the fan-out system, the previous year’s green cards will be used by volunteer callers.
Every child will be placed safely and accounted for. If a parent cannot be notified, staff will contact emergency names from green cards; place the child at a friend or neighbor’s home; or hold the child in the office until an appropriate emergency contact is made. Because the goal is to clear the facility as quickly as possible, Prime Time Care will not operate.
All staff shall stay to supervise students until the building is cleared and all students board buses or leave the campus. Teaching and support staff will then be released in accordance with provisions of their respective master agreements.
In the event of early dismissal or an emergency at a secondary school(s), an announcement will be made on the public address system to students and all personnel. If the public address system is not functional, information will be provided by runner.

Only the director of operations, or his or her designee, shall notify the director of transportation if one or more schools are to be dismissed early. The supervisor of transportation shall notify bus drivers. In the event radio contact is impossible, the supervisor of transportation may designate a principal to notify a bus driver. A principal may direct a bus driver only if so directed by the supervisor of transportation or in the event that communication with the transportation department is impossible.
The supervisor of food service will work with the director of operations to provide food under emergency conditions, if necessary. Alternative lunches may have to be substituted and special delivery used.
In an emergency, the director of community relations and marketing shall act as district spokesperson.
